The fire started in 1917 by Bolshevism swept away the very heart of Asia in a whirlwind of fire and blood. Against the hordes that are sweeping across the ravaged country, stands, solitary, a simple cavalry squadron leader who proclaims himself general. His name is Roman Feodorovitch von Ungern-Sternberg. Of Baltic origin, rough, wild, merciless, he wants to be a wolf among the wolves of the steppe. In 1920 he crossed the Mongolian border, conquered Ourga, the capital, and attempted to realize Genghis Khan's great dream: the conquest of Asia and then Europe. The last leader of the White armies, he will be very close to realizing his crazy ambition. Betrayed and captured during a raid in Siberia, he was shot to death by the Reds in 1921, after being celebrated by the Mongols as their reincarnated god of war.

Text: Jean Mabire. Drawings: Jacques Terpant.
